A parasitic fungus that attacks rye plants produces a structure called an Ergot.
Ergot is a fungus that grows on rye and less commonly on other grasses such as wheat. Parasitic fungi that live on plants are called phytopathogenic fungi. The first obvious sign of ergot infection is appearance of 'honeydew', a sticky yellow sugary solution consisting of host sap and conidia between the affected glumes of the rye. Ergotism is a form of poisoning from ingesting grains, typically rye, that have been infected by the ascomycete fungus Claviceps purpurate. Ergotism has no antidote, so treatment involves removing the animals from the source of the ergot and alleviating the symptoms.
