Recall that  Muzafer Sherif and his colleagues conducted the "robbers cave" study, which generated conflict between two groups of boys. this study showed that: a subordinate goal reduced intergroup conflict.

According to Muzafer Sherif, conflict between groups—also known as intergroup conflict—occurs when two groups are vying for the same scarce resources. Evidence from a well-known research looking at group conflict lends credence to this theory: The Robbers Cave Study.

These possibilities were investigated in the robbers cave study:

  • Unknown individuals will form a group structure with hierarchical roles and statuses when they are brought together to cooperate in group activities in order to accomplish shared goals.
  • Two in-groups will develop attitudes and appropriate hostile behaviours toward the out-group and its members when they are brought into functional interaction under competitive and group-frustrating circumstances. These behaviours will be standardised and shared to varied degrees by group members.
