Rimes are deposit of ice crystals that forms on objects at temperatures below freezing. Frost occurs when super-cooled water droplets in fog come into contact with surfaces that are below freezing. The droplets are so small that they freeze as soon as they touch an object. Rime is common on the windward slopes of super-cooled, cloud-covered mountains.
It consists of small ice particles with air pockets between them. This structure results in the typical white appearance and granular structure. Due to the rapid freezing of individual super-cooled droplets, the cohesive forces between adjacent ice particles are relatively low and the deposits can be easily shattered or removed from the object on which they are formed.
