In the context of international dispute resolution, conciliation is also known as mediation. Primary distinction between conciliation and mediation proceedings is that the parties will occasionally request non-binding settlement suggestion from the conciliator during the conciliation. A mediator, on the other hand, will typically and on principle avoid offering such a suggestion.

Conciliation is voluntary process in which the parties are free to decide to try and settle their disagreement through conciliation. The method is adaptable and enables parties to specify  length, format, and substance of the conciliation processes. In mediation, parties will ultimately decide whether to reach a solution.
