Small particles of solids, like dust, and liquids, like water, suspended in the atmosphere make up atmospheric aerosols. Atmospheric aerosols can either be released into the atmosphere as a single particle, similar to ash, or they can form when released gases go through complicated chemical reactions and condense as particles.

Atmospheric aerosols come from a variety of sources and can be further divided into those that are naturally occurring or those that are caused by human activity. Natural aerosols come in a wide variety of forms, including dust, sea salt, smoke, and those produced by living things, or biogenic aerosols.
