What is referred pain?

  • Referred pain is that in which you feel pain in one part of your body but that pain is caused due to injury/pain is some other region.
  • E.g.: Due to gastric juice reflux in the esophagus, you feel pain in your heart.
  • Referred pain is caused because our body is connected by a network of sensory nerves which carry stimulus from one part of the body to another.
  • Due to injury at one site in the network, the signal is interpreted by the brain and sent to other tissues.
  • Referred pain can occur to anyone, at any time, at any or multiple regions.
