A heart sound resulting from normal ventricular filling could be called a functional murmur.

How does heart produces sounds?

  • A functional murmur is caused due to conditions outside the heart resulting in rapid blood flow through the heart
  • Heart is a muscular organ which pumps blood into the blood vessels by repeated contractions.
  • Human heart consists of 4 chambers- upper two atria and lower two ventricles.
  • Heart murmurs are swishing sounds which can be heard with a stethoscope.
  • Heart murmurs can be of different types on the basis of events occurring:

       i) Diastolic murmur: When blood is filled into the heart

      ii) Systolic murmur: When blood comes out from heart

     iii) Continuous murmur: Occurs regularly during the heartbeat
