What is hypothermia?

  • In hypothermia the body temperature drops very low such that even necessary body functions cannot be maintained resulting in the vasoconstriction of blood vessels.
  • Vasoconstriction (shrinking) of blood vessels helps by decreasing the exchange of heat of the organism’s body with the environment as the blood flow is decreased.
  • Hypothermia is a medical emergency mainly caused due to exposure to cold for long time resulting is loss of heat faster than the body is able to generate it.
  • It affects the brain resulting in confusion, memory loss, slurred speech.
  • The initial symptom is uncontrolled shivering.
  • Try to keep a hypothermic patient warm and provide medical care as soon as possible.
