Women in war, or the women's branch of the United States Army, became members of the military and underwent rigorous army training.
The women's division of the United States Army was known as the Women's Army Corps (WAC). The Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) was developed as a support group.
Three key specialties comprised the initial training for the WAAC. The most intelligent and agile people received switchboard operator training. Then came the mechanics, who needed to be highly skilled in mechanical aptitude and problem-solving.
The recruiters with the lowest scores were mostly bakers. Later, this was broadened to include a large number of specialties, including Postal Clerk, and Clerk-Typist. Small guns and heavier weapons that they were not permitted to use were maintained and serviced by WAC armorers.
