Yo-yo ma’s most significant and lasting foray outside of the European concert tradition is Silk Road project.
He started the Silk Road Project with the intention of uniting artists and cultures from the areas once crossed by the Silk Road, a trading route that, starting in the second century BCE, changed Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. The Silk Road stretched from Italy to Japan. The Silk Road represented cross cultural interchange in Ma's eyes. Clothing, artifacts, musical instruments, songs, stories, and religious beliefs were all transported down the Silk Road for two millennia from one end of the known globe to the other. The ancient Silk Road, according to Ma, is "a paradigm for fruitful cultural engagement, for the flow of ideas and customs alongside trade and innovation"—values he wishes to further in the contemporary day.
