The white blood cell that consumes microorganisms (a process known as phagocytosis -- "phago" meaning " to eat," and "-cytosis" meaning "cell") is a monocyte. However, the monocyte can migrate out of the blood vessels and into other body tissues to devour pathogens. When does this, it becomes known as a macrophage. Hope this helps!
