5(x+5)=65

5*x=5x
5*5=25

65-25=40
40/5=8 ("when you divide do not touch the x")

well first use distributive property
5x+25=65
Next subtract 25 on each side 
5x=40
Next divide 5 on both side which equal 8 so
x=8
