The wording of the question is not very good.....perhaps they meant to say that after the 5 seconds the velocity is now 24 m/s ?

a1 *10   +   a2 *5   = -6 m/s  

            ( 6 m/s is the change in velocity from 30 to 24 m/s)    

    a1/a2 = 1.5    so   a2 = a1/1.5   (substitute this in)

10 a1   + 5 ( a1/1.5)  =-6

15 a1 + 5 a1  = -9

a1 =  - .45 m/s^2
