The amount of disinfectant solution required are; 17.5 gallons of 40% disinfectant solution and 7.5 gallons of 50% disinfectant solution
We want to find how much 50% disinfectant solution must be mixed with a 40% disinfectant solution to produce 25 gal of a 43% disinfectant solution.
Let the quantity of 50% disinfectant solution be x.
Let the quantity of 40% disinfectant solution be y.
Thus;
0.5x + 0.4y = 25 *0.43
0.5x + 0.4y = 10.75 ------(1)
Also;
x + y = 25 ------(2)
Make x the subject in eq 2 to get;
x = 25 - y
Thus;
0.5(25 - y) + 0.4y = 10.75
12.5 - 0.5y + 0.4y = 10.75
12.5 - 0.1y = 10.75
0.1y = 12.5 - 10.75
y = 1.75/0.1
y = 17.5 gallons of 40% disinfectant solution
x = 25 - 17.5
x = 7.5 gallons of 50% disinfectant solution
