My view on British use of authority and power was that the British exhibit dominance and formal control  over its colonies.

How did the British have power over the colonies?

They were said to have made use pf the formal control over their colonies, as they established their dominance.

The event that caused conflict between the colonies and England was the American Revolution as it was said to be a strong colonial opposition to British ways as they want to impose a huge amount of control over their colonies and to make them pay the crown for its defense of them in course of the French and Indian War.
