Where in the world have genocides or attempted genocides taken place? why did they occur?

Now, looking at the area where a genocide (attempted) occurred, was there a correlation in which major power had control of those lands in the decades prior? If so,
why did the European powers want control of that land mass? Did the new leaders want to help their fellow citizens and share the newly controlled wealth in their country? Why or why not.
