Why was Amendment 14 significant to citizens residing in the United States?

on july 28, 1868 , the 14th amendment to the U.S constitution was ratified. The amendment grants citizens to 'all persons born or naturalized in the U.S' which includes former slaves who had just been free after the civil war.
