Cortes arrived in Tenochtitlan with horses and soldiers. Moctezuma thought that he must be the god Quetzalcoatl who had promised to return and rule the Aztecs. Moctezuma was captured, held hostage and later killed. The Aztecs drove Cortes out, but he later returned and defeated the Aztecs.
