Following World War II the United States worked to "combat" the spread of Soviet expansion into Europe by working to keep Europe squarely within the United States' sphere of influence. Through measures such as the Marshall Plan and the creation of NATO the U.S. tried to "contain" Soviet expansion into Europe.
