Ralph was elected by Piggy to be the group's leader; however, as the brains behind the leader, Piggy stands to be the true leader to the group. Piggy is the one that decides the conch is the best option to gather the group, and, although he is smart enough to help all of the boys survives, he elects Ralph because Ralph has the confidence it takes to get others to listen to him.
