When you have two variables next to eachother, that means to multiply.  So that's the same as

[tex]A=L*W[/tex]

They give that [tex]L = 12[/tex] and [tex]W = 6[/tex]

So now you plug [tex]L[/tex] and [tex]W[/tex] into the equation:

[tex]A=12*6[/tex]

If you multiply [tex]12*6[/tex] you get [tex]72[/tex]

So your final answer is 72!
