Why would you expect sodium (Na) to react strongly with chlorine (Cl)?

We know, Sodium has 1 electron in its valence shell and Chlorine has one vacant, so when they react sodium loses an electron & transfer it to chlorine, as they form a strong ionic bond. That's why they react strongly with each other
