I'd say it's a seriously, gloomy, horrible mood, like how the people die, and when the old man is telling the story about the paw.

We would define the mood throughout the story "The Monkey';s Paw" by defining "Creepy" and "Foreboding" as these are two descriptions of the mood that prevails in W. W. Jacobs' short story
