They are fundamentally different, for a very simple reason: Khrushchev was a dedicated Stalinist, who sought ONLY to remove the threat of murder from the Stalinist system, Gorbachev was a dedicated communist, prepared to delve deep into the country's communist past to find a 'communist' solution to the problems of the USSR.

Collective farms were paid more for grain and taxes on peasants were lowered and the amount of grain requisitioned was reduced therefore more was left for farms to sell.
