Sodium and potassium need to be pumped and not just travel by passive or facilitated diffusion because the cell is concentrating sodium and ridding itself of potassium.
Cells have greater amount of potassium in it and lower amount of sodium 'cause it is abundant in it's surrounding environment. Cells pumps out their ions in & out of the cell by active transport, and maintains the level.
