Eugene Sledge in Old Breed served his country by battling with their enemy and he forsook his other career because of the love he has for his country.

Also, Shigeru Mizuki went to war in Onward Toward with other military men conquering most of their enemies although the citizen of their country thought they had all died at the battle which they got wrong. Majority of them survived the battle front.

Therefore, The war was indeed a fierce and terrified place for Eugene Sledge unlike Shigeru Mizuki who had less fear for battle.
