Ugly Duckling, a duck is always mocked and bullied because he is ugly.  The Princess Diaries, Mia is the clumsy girl who is not even considered to be very pretty.  

The Princess Diaries shows the same theme as that of Ugly Duckling. It makes you to be who you are, and to ignore those who critics.

The theme is made more modern and makes human teenagers as a protagonist.
