The following glands may be classified by using the drop-down menus:
- Pituitary Gland ------ Endocrine
- Thyroid Gland ------- Endocrine
- Salivary Gland ------- Exocrine.
What do you mean by Glands?
A gland is an organ that produces and releases substances that perform a specific function in the body. They perform a key role in the metabolism process.
Endocrine Glands secrete hormones whereas exocrine glands secrete enzymes. The pituitary gland secretes growth hormone, LH, etc, while the thyroid gland secretes thyroxine hormone. So, both of these glands are classified under Endocrine glands. But the salivary gland produces an enzyme called salivary amylases, which leads to the formation of saliva. Hence, it is classified under the exocrine gland.
Therefore, all the above-described glands are classified on the basis of their functions.
