Clara bought a beautiful plant for her apartment. Clara lives in a basement apartment that receives very little sunlight. She placed the plant close to the only window in the apartment. After a few weeks, the plant has started to die. Clara is very confused and upset. She gave the plant fertilizer and enough water. Explain to Clara why her plant is dying.

Some plants require direct sunlight for a few hours at a time in order to stay healthy. Because Clara lives in a basement apartment that doesn't receive much sunlight, it is an unsafe environment for a plant to live in. Plants need sunlight to create energy, creating that energy also creates food which allows the plant to consume that food and feed itself. If the plant doesn't receive enough sunlight because it is in a place where not much sunlight goes then it cannot create the amount of food, it needs to survive which will cause it to die slowly. If Clara wants to save her plant, she needs to keep giving it proper fertilizer and water while finding a new location to put it where it can receive all the sunlight it needs to create its food.
