At the beginning of the twentieth century, photographers used its growing influence to expose the evils in the society, of which the prosperous, self-indulgent Belle Époque chose to ignore.

Now, Hine was worked in local factories as a youth and attended the State Normal School in Oshkosh as a young adult and then he became a teacher and school photographer at New York.

Hine was really determined to teach his students compassion and respect for immigrants and as a result, he began to photograph immigrants coming through Ellis Island which led a full-time photographer.

He produced documentary photography for social reform and showed the world the real people that he found with pictures and photo essays: Close -ups of children working, kids in mills, orphans on the streets, sweatshops, adult laborers, immigrant families, and struggling individuals.
