Read the poem "Harlem" by Langston hughes. What happens to a dream deferred? does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore- and then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over- like a syrupy sweet> Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? Discuss the meaning of two instances of figurative language. Then, choose three words and explain how to connotations of those words create meaning in the poem.

"raisin in the sun" which is also the name of a famous play about an African American family moving into a white neighborhood

raisin in the sun...when a grape has been dried by the sun or beat up like this poem says, it shrivels into a raisin. meaning when a dream has been delayed too long and neglected it can change or shrivel

shrivel can remind us of when a plant has not been given watered and nutured...plant can shrink

what it means to put dreams on hold
