Potential energy is stored energy meaning something is waiting to come out and when it does it will turn into kinetic energy.
Say you had a bow in arrow when you pull that back and are waiting to let it go that is potential energy and then when you do let it go it turns into kinetic.
Potential energy is electrical,chemical,nuclear and mechanical energy it is also gravitational energy.
You could also say potential energy is a object being held depending on it's position like when a roller coaster stops at the top ,that is potential energy and then when it goes down it again turns into kinetic.
