The kinetochore is the structure to which spindle fiber attach to drive chromosomes. If a cell was missing the kinetochores on one of its chromosomes, it would not be able to get past the metaphase checkpoint.

What are the kinetochores?

The kinetochore is a laminar proteinic structure composing a plate to which the spindle fibers can attach during chromosomes movements. They are surrounding the centromere.

The kinetochore fibers get formed at the end of the prophase. They are involved in

  • the arrangement of chromosomes in the equatorial plane, during the metaphase, and
  • in segregation of homologous chromosomes and chromatids during the anaphase.

Microtubules of the spindle apparatus attach to the chromosomes by the kinetochores and drive them to their positions.
