Zoral Neale Hurston titled the story "Spunk" not only to refer to one of the characters who is known by that name but also to show that anyone can have spunk when it comes to defending their honor.
The character that has the most spunk is Joe. Even though he is afraid, he tries to defend his honor. When he dies, he still comes back and finishes what he had started in life. His determination is undeniable.
In the short story by Hurston, Joe is constantly teased by the men in town because of his wife's affair with Spunk Banks. One day, tired of being bullied, Joe decides to face Spunk, but ends up killed. This was already his first moment of bravery, since Joe was known for being a coward.
Joe turns out to have more spunk that Spunk himself. Even dead his determination does not falter. He comes back and ends up taking revenge, killing Spunk. He now has the respect of all men in town.
