A Reflection on the Dred Scott v. Sanford case
March 6, 1857, was the date of the Dred Scott v Sanford Supreme Court decision. Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney delivered this opinion, which determined that slaves were not citizens of the United States and could not sue in federal courts. As a result of this decision, the Missouri Compromise was declared against the law, and the law prohibiting slavery in the Territories was rejected by the Supreme Court. Constitutional Amendments 13 and 14 overturned the Dred Scott decision.
