The reason why Julia Howard rewrote the lyrics was due to the fact that  she was supporting abolitionism.

What is abolitionism?

This was a term that was used by activists and the Northern part of the US to show the disdain that they had towards slavery in the country.

They wanted a stop in the use of slave in the US. This writer was in support of the Union army and she wrote the poem to show her dislike for slavery.
