The standard deviation, the range, and the interquartile range (iqr) summarize the variability of the data. Why is the iqr sometimes preferred to the standard deviation?.

Respuesta :

The reason why the IQR is sometimes preferred to the standard deviation is because; the IQR is less sensitive to outliers than standard deviation.

Interquartile Range

In statistics, there is what we call outliers. Now outliers are values in a data set that is very different from the other values in that same data set.

Now, standard deviation is very sensitive to outliers and as such its' result is affected by it in statistics whereas the Interquartile Range (IQR) is not affected by an outlier.

In conclusion, we sometimes prefer an IQR to standard deviation because IQR is less sensitive to outliers than standard deviation.
