We opened this chapter by discussing Federal Prison Industries (FPI). This program employs incarcerated individuals who work many different jobs, using different types of tools and machinery. Having prison residents perform work has been common ever since the first U.S. penitentiary opened. However, the way in which convicted individuals perform work has changed over the years.

1. Recall that the separate confinement system in Pennsylvania had people in "productive labor" alone in their cells. Could the FPI's garment factory coordinate its confined labor force using the separate confinement system. Explain your answer.

2, In the New York system, prison inhabitants were employed in workshops but were forbidden to talk to one another. To enforce this rule, Warden Elam Lynds advocated using a whip. Would a rule of silence help FPI employees work more efficiently? Because the use of a whip would not be tolerated today, how would you enforce such a rule? What would Elam Lynds think of FPI?

3. How are the people incarcerated in today's prisons different from those who were once confined in the Pennsylvania and New York systems during the early 1800s? How might these differences influence prison work programs? Could a work program be effective for all prison inhabitants regardless of the historical time period? What would such a work program look like?

Respuesta :

Prisoners are often used as laborers sometimes in prisons. Separate Confinement is known to be a method of punishment used where the convicted people are often required to perform all of their productive activities from the cell itself being fully isolated.

What separate confinement system is about.

The FPI's garment factory can coordinate its confined labor force using the separate confinement system.  It would be easy to coordinate as they can coordinate the work easily.

This is because the aim of the separate confinement system is for inmates to realize their guilt and therefore through the isolation, they can reflect on their actions and repent if need be.

For  productivity sake, FPI can make use of dimension such as 12 by 8 by 10 feet with a washroom, folding bed and  exercise yard attached  to it.

The rule of silence will in some way help FPI employees work more efficiently but not all because some people work better when they are interacting with others.

Because the use of a whip would not be tolerated today, To enforce the rule of silence through deduction of points. Where if a person work under silence, they are given point which can be used within the prison for example; an added spoon of food or to be free from a certain task and point reduce if one disobey.

I think  Elam Lynds would like the FPI as it is more better and improved system.

The people incarcerated in today's prisons is quite different  from those who were once confined in the Pennsylvania and New York systems as there are some measures of freedom and less costly than when compared to separate confinement system that is practiced in Pennsylvania which is very costly to maintain.

A work program will be effective for all prison inhabitants regardless of the historical time period because it will make prisoners to be more productive and be useful in life.

A work program would look like daily routines that prison inmates would be engaged in and actively participate in.
