“Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.” What does Martin Luther King Jr mean when he says this?

In my opinion, MLK JR means that we cannot be free when we continually act bitter and hateful towards others. If you are thirsty for something, you desire a drink to quench the thirst. The desire for freedom cannot be met with acts of bitterness and hatred for any reason.
