Both photosynthesis and cellular respiration contribute to the cycle of carbon because the former helps fix carbon into living organisms while the latter helps break down carbon.

Carbon Cycle

The carbon cycle is largely influenced by photosynthesis and respiration.

During photosynthesis, carbon in the form of carbon dioxide is fixed into living systems through green plants. Tons of carbon are fixed annually by photosynthesis.

The reverse occurs during respiration. Some of the carbon in living systems are broken down and released as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Hence, both processes influence the flux of carbon in the atmosphere and biological systems.
