What is probability?

Probability calculates the chances that an event would happen. The likelihood of the event occurring lies between 0 and 1. It is zero if the event does not occur and 1 if the event occurs.

For example, the probability that a student can count or not count is between 1 and 1. If the student can count, a probability of 1 is given and if the student cannot count, a probability of 0 is given.

The number of boys that can count is 42.

The probability that any pupil is a boy and can count = number of boys that can count / total number of pupils

= 42 / 100

= 0.42

The probability a boy can count = number of boys that can count / total number of boys

42 / 53 = 0.79
