A relation is a function such that there are no input values that are paired with more than one output values. Thus, if a graph contains two or more different points with the same x-coordinate, then that graph is not a representation of a function. A great way to test whether a given graph represents a function is through the Vertical Line Test.

In order to perform the Vertical Line Test, simply draw vertical lines across the graph. If each vertical line drawn intersects the graph in at most once, then it means that the given graph represents a function.  

The parent graphs of quadratic function, f(x) = x², and cubic function, f(x) = x³, are not straight lines.  Attached are screenshots of the graphed quadratic function and cubic function which shows that these graphs pass the Vertical Line Test.
