Liquefaction is a process that occurs in a solid mass whereby high water pressure or vibrations causes the particles of the solid to lose contact.

There are areas that are more susceptible to liquefaction that others.

These areas are:

  • Regions of man-made landfills such as Shale landfills

  • Poorly drained fine-grained soils such as siltstone.

  • Low density soils such as limestone and granite.

These areas are prone to liquefaction because the composition of the soil is made up of numerous pores which collapse upon high water pressure and vibration decrease the overall volume of the soil.
