Glycolysis and aerobic respiration collectively produce up to ____________ ATP per glucose, whereas anaerobic fermentation produces ____________.

Respuesta :

Glycolysis and aerobic respiration are cellular reactions that produce up to 38 ATP per glucose, whereas anaerobic fermentation that occurs in the absence of oxygen produces 2 ATP.

In cells, ATP is synthesized through cellular respiration, a process that takes place in the cell's mitochondria, it can be divided into three stages:

  • Glycolysis.
  • The Krebs cycle.
  • The electron transport chain.

During the first two stages, acetyl-CoA, CO2 and only a small amount of ATP are produced, while during the third phase of respiration H2O is originated and in the process, 36-38 molecules of ATP are produced.

On the other hand, fermentation is called an incomplete oxidation process, which does not require oxygen to take place, and which produces only 2 molecules of ATP per molecule of glucose consumed.

Therefore, we can conclude that glycolysis, aerobic respiration and anaerobic fermentation are processes that release the chemical energy stored in glucose in the form of ATP.
