The Trait Theory of leadership takes the position that leadership traits are inborn.

Some of the traits put forward by this theory as being consistent with leaders are:

  • Extroversion
  • Height
  • Intelligence
  • Dominance
  • Self-Confidence etc.

According to the Trait Approach to leadership, leaders are more likely to have the above traits more than followers.

The problem with this view is that it posits that leadership traits are genetic and if a person is not born with them, they could never become a leader.

This theory is one of the earliest in Leadership studies. Recent schools of thought have of course debunked a lot of its claims.
