An interest group is a collection of individuals who have shared interests and who band together to exert influence on the government. There are five types of interest groups. They are the Public,  Economic, Professional, Ideological and Single-Issue Interest Group.

Interest groups have the potential to be both good and bad. In that they reflect the interests and concerns of a varied range of groups, they are effective in that they may act on their behalf to influence public policy.
