Research has shown that Inca surgeons were incredibly skilled in their practice. Recent archaeological finds demonstrate that they performed and nearly perfected a very difficult operation. This operation, known as trepanation, is the removal of a small portion of the skull. This operation is still used today to relieve pressure on the brain in cases of severe head trauma. Researchers believe that this operation was used by the Inca surgeons on men who had been wounded in battle. When researchers compared the skulls of the Inca patients, they found that the more recent patients had a much higher survival rate.
