The book gets potential energy as it goes higher and if you release it while its falling its potential energy goes away as it gets kinetic energy but when it hits the floor again it gets thermal energy
simply put it is a pulling force because you are directing your mass and energy into a concentrated movement that requires that energy and are exerting it to pull the object (aka the book)
