Respuesta :

The events of April 14, 1865 in which Abraham Lincoln was assassinated was more of an attempted coup d'état as opposed to an assassination attempt.

Towards the end of the American Civil War:

  • John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Lincoln on April 14, 1865
  • George Atzerodt was to assassinate the Vice President
  • David Harold was to assassinate the Secretary of State

The main aim of these three men was to destabilize the Union which would allow a resurgence in the Confederate ranks and eventually lead to the Confederates defeating the Union.

It was therefore an attempted coup d'état that was intended to replace Lincoln's government with the Confederacy.

We can conclude therefore, that the events of April 14 were more of a coup d'état than an assassination attempt.
