messages sent by Greg = x - 9

messages sent by Tom = 4(x - 9)

and, total number of messages sent by them all together is equal to ~ 153

• $x + x - 9 + 4(x - 9) = 153$

• $2x - 9 + 4x - 36 = 153$

• $6x - 45 = 153$

• $6x = 153 + 45$

• $6x = 198$

• $x = 198 \div 6$
